Spiritual Abuse is a phenomena deserving of more research. Academics, lay people, and leaders have different understandings and definitions of Spiritual Abuse. Depending on one's position and reason for defining spiritual abuse, there may be a focus on the use of the sacred text, or not. There is also a thin, often blurry, line between a context of spiritual abuse and the context of a cult. Spiritual Abuse can happen in mainline churches and those on the fringe. Spiritual Abuse can happen in Eastern Religions, in all of the three Abrahamic traditions, and in any religious or spiritual context. The research included here offers ideas for understanding spiritual abuse, how to help others, and how to help yourself. The research listed here is by no means comprehensive, and this page will be updated as more is made available.
