Joy, by nature, is fleeting. It is a sudden and sweeping feeling of euphoria. Joy is more than happiness and different from happiness. Happiness can be longer lasting but joy can be more intense.
Can one increase the amount of joy in their life? I believe the answer lies in the practice of gratitude. If one is not appreciative, that person will overlook the events or things that can cause joy. If a person is always rushing or multitasking she or he will not appreciate the joy that come from the smallest of things- a giggling child, watching the sunset, talking with a friend over a cup of coffee. She or he will fail to find joy, because without intentionally looking, we screen out the seemingly minor details.
To increase your joy, you must learn to be fully in the present moment. Turn off all distractions. Turn off all worries about the past or the future. Use your senses to experience, not to evaluate, the present place and time.
